Responsibilities:
The Justice of the Peace courts have jurisdiction over Class C Misdemeanor cases, Justice Court and Small Claims Court cases, where the amount in controversy does not exceed $20,000 and has jurisdiction over Evictions suits. The Justice of the Peace may issue warrants for arrest, search warrants, conduct Administrative Magistrate Hearings, including bail settings, arraignments, driver’s license suspensions, examining trials and stolen property. The court collects fines and fees for various civil and criminal cases. The Justice of the Peace performs marriage ceremonies, issues emergency protective orders, appoints attorneys for felony defendants and acts as county coroner.
